What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra is a guided relaxation practice that brings you into a state of deep rest. Often called “yogic sleep,” it allows you to explore the space between wakefulness and sleep, where the body is completely relaxed, but the mind remains gently aware. The practice has evolved over time, drawing from traditional yogic practices, Buddhist techniques and modern neuroscience. It follows a structured method designed to guide you toward a deeply restful and restorative state of consciousness.

A Yoga Nidra session may include different techniques designed to promote relaxation and awareness, such as:

🌀 Rotation of Awareness – A guided journey through the body to release tension and promote physical relaxation.

🌿 Breath Awareness – Slows the breath and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, supporting deep rest.

⚖️ Exploring Opposites – Shifting between contrasting sensations (such as heaviness and lightness) to enhance awareness and emotional balance.

🎭 Imagery & Visualisation – Engaging the imagination to encourage creativity, healing and stress relief.

💫 Intention Setting (Sankalpa) – Planting a personal intention or affirmation to support transformation.

Yoga Nidra has a measurable impact on the brain and nervous system, helping to reduce stress, improve sleep, enhance creativity and support emotional well-being. Unlike traditional meditation, there’s no effort required—simply lie (or sit) down, listen, and allow the process to unfold.

Getting Ready for Yoga Nidra

To get the most out of your Yoga Nidra practice, take a moment to settle in:

🔷 Remove any glasses, belts or tight clothing.

🔷 Find a comfortable position—lying down is ideal, but you can also sit if preferred.

🔷 If lying on your back, keep your legs uncrossed and arms relaxed at your sides.

🔷 Use a pillow under your head so your chin is slightly tucked for comfort.

🔷 Cover yourself with a blanket to stay warm.

🔷 Ideally, practice in a quiet space where you’re not touching anyone else.

Contraindications & Cautions

Yoga Nidra is a deeply restorative practice, but there are contraindications and situations where caution is advised.

🚫 Contraindications:

Yoga Nidra is not recommended for individuals with schizophrenia or a history of psychosis due to the altered states of awareness involved.

️ Cautions:

Trauma & PTSD: While Yoga Nidra can be supportive, it may also be triggering for some. A shorter session, movement beforehand, or practicing in a seated position may be more suitable.

Pregnancy: After a certain stage, lying flat on the back or right side is not recommended. A comfortable, propped-up position is advised.

Vertigo & Dizziness: If lying down worsens symptoms, try a supported reclined or seated position instead.

Neurodiversity: Individuals may have different needs. Shorter sessions or gentle movement beforehand may be helpful.

If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider before practicing.

Sharon Rayner,

Yoga Teacher

Hi, I’m Sharon, and I’m here to help you experience deep rest.

As a yoga teacher, I’ve always been dedicated to helping my students relax, unwind and feel at ease in their bodies. When I first started teaching, my savasana (final relaxation) was completely silent—but over time, I noticed how much my students responded to guided relaxation.

I began introducing gentle body scans, and the feedback was clear: my students loved the deep relaxation and found my voice soothing. I now weave in short Yoga Nidra practices at the end of class, and they have quickly became a favourite part of the session.

Hearing my students say things like “That was exactly what I needed” and “I wish I could do this every night” made me realise how much people need access to deep rest beyond their yoga class.

That’s why I created Yoga Nidra Online with Sharon—so you can access soothing, guided relaxation anytime you need it. Whether it’s after a long day, before sleep, or simply when you crave a moment of stillness, my goal is to help you feel calm, rested and deeply restored.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra is a guided relaxation practice that helps you rest deeply while staying aware. It’s often called “yogic sleep” because it brings you into a state of deep relaxation that feels as restorative as sleep.

What’s the difference between Yoga Nidra and meditation?

Yoga Nidra and meditation share similarities, but they are not the same. Traditional meditation often involves seated awareness, focusing on the breath or a mantra. Yoga Nidra, on the other hand, is usually practiced lying down and systematically guides you into a deeply relaxed state, between wakefulness and sleep.

Unlike many forms of meditation that require sustained focus or effort, Yoga Nidra is a guided process of letting go—allowing relaxation to unfold naturally rather than consciously striving for stillness.

Some people consider Yoga Nidra a unique practice, while others view it as a form of guided meditation. Either way, it is a powerful tool for deep rest, self-exploration and nervous system regulation.

How long are the Yoga Nidra sessions?

Since this is a new membership, I’m starting with sessions around 15–40 minutes. Over time, the library will grow, and I’ll shape the session lengths based on feedback from my Founding Members. This means future sessions may include a mix of shorter and longer variations to suit different needs.

What do I need to practice Yoga Nidra Online with Sharon?

All you need is a device with internet access to stream the sessions through the Offering Tree platform or app.

For the best experience, you may also want:

🎧 Headphones (optional) – Helpful if you prefer an immersive experience or want to block out background noise.

🛏️ A comfortable space – You can lie down on a bed, yoga mat or recliner, with cushions or blankets for support.

🔕 A quiet environment – Try to minimise distractions so you can fully relax. That’s it! Just press play and let my voice guided you into deep rest.

😊 How should I prepare for a Yoga Nidra session?

For the best experience:

🔹 Choose a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed. Remove any tight clothing like belts or glasses.

🔹 Lie down in a comfortable position (or sit if preferred).

🔹 Keep your legs uncrossed and support your head with a pillow so your chin is slightly tucked.

🔹 Cover yourself with a blanket to stay warm.

Do I need any experience with yoga or meditation?

Not at all! Yoga Nidra is completely guided, making it accessible to most people, even if you’ve never meditated before. Please also see the section on Contraindications & Cautions.

What if my mind is too busy?
This is completely normal! Some days your mind will be still, and other times it will be full of thoughts. Even if it feels like “nothing is happening,” the process is still working. Just let the thoughts come and go—there’s no need to force stillness.

What if I can’t concentrate or understand what’s being said?

Yoga Nidra works beyond the conscious mind. You may drift in and out or hear words without fully processing them. This is normal and a sign you’re going deeper. Just allow the experience to unfold naturally.

What if I feel bored or restless?

This can be part of the process. Instead of resisting, try observing the feeling. Often, boredom arises just before something deeper unfolds—stay open to the experience.

Do I need to “do” anything during Yoga Nidra?

No, Yoga Nidra is something you receive, not something you “do.” There’s no right or wrong experience—sometimes you’ll feel deeply relaxed, other times your mind may wander. Whatever happens is okay.

Do I have to stay still the whole time?

It’s best to stay still if possible, as this allows for deep relaxation. However, if you need to adjust, move slowly and mindfully so you don’t disturb yourself.

Can I listen to the sessions while falling asleep?

Yes! Many people use Yoga Nidra to help them sleep better. You can listen in bed and drift off naturally.

What happens if I fall asleep?

Sometimes your body needs sleep more than anything else. If you wake up when the session ends, you likely weren’t in deep sleep but in a different state of awareness. Over time, you may learn to recognise and remain in the space between wakefulness and sleep, where Yoga Nidra is most effective.

How often do you add new sessions?

I will start by adding two new Yoga Nidra sessions each month, building a growing library of practices. Sessions will vary in length, focus and approach, drawing on different Yoga Nidra techniques. As the membership evolves, feedback from my Founding Members will help shape the variety and frequency of new sessions.

Will I have lifetime access to the sessions?

As long as you remain a member, you’ll have unlimited access to all available recordings.

Can I download the audio sessions?

No, the sessions are not available for download. Members can stream all sessions anytime through the Offering Tree website or app.

What if I don’t have much time?

That’s the beauty of Yoga Nidra! You don’t need to set aside hours—even a short session can be deeply restorative. The membership includes a mix of session lengths, starting with 15–40-minute practices, so you can choose what fits your schedule.

Can anyone do Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra is accessible to most adults and can be adapted to suit different needs, whether for deep rest, stress relief or improved sleep. However, Yoga Nidra is not recommended for individuals with schizophrenia or a history of psychosis. If you have trauma or PTSD, it’s best to seek guidance from a trauma-informed teacher.

How do I cancel my membership or request a refund?

You can cancel anytime through the Offering Tree platform or email me, and I’ll handle it for you.

If you’re not satisfied in your first month, I’m happy to offer a refund upon request. After the first month, refunds are not available, but you can still cancel at any time to stop future payments.
